Mercedes-Benz's new diesel generates an impressive 500 N·m (369 lb·ft) of torque

Diesel technology became even more efficient when Mercedes-Benz revealed its C250CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime Edition at the Paris Motor Show, the first model in the company’s range to receive the all-new 2.2-L four-cylinder diesel unit.

Maximum power output is 150 kW (201 hp), and maximum torque is a very impressive 500 N·m (369 lb·ft), a combination sufficient to take the car to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.0 s and a 250-km/h (155-mph) top speed. Combined fuel consumption (NEDC) is 5.2 L/100 km, and CO2 emissions are 138 g/km.

Mercedes’ Chairman, Dr. Dieter Zetsche said the car meets stiff environmental criteria but still provides driving pleasure. He said there were several particular areas of technology that contributed to the engine’s combination of required characteristics: a maximum ignition pressure of 200 bar (2.9 ksi); fourth-generation common-rail technology with pressure up by 400 bar (5.8 ksi) to 2000 bar (29 ksi); a new piezo-injector concept with direct nozzle needle control for enhanced flexibility of injection timing; larger variable oil spray nozzles and variable water pump; and dual-stage supercharging.

Also significant is the car’s manual transmission, with an overdrive sixth ratio; tuning of aerodynamics; low rolling resistance tires; and adaptive power steering.

The new model is based on the C-Class Avantgarde, and equipment includes situation-responsive dampers, intelligent lighting system, and Pre-Safe anticipatory occupant-protection system.
